Fresh off the plane and the temperature is somewhere in the mid-thirties, a shock after living on my permafrost street in Queenstown - and this stream is actually a hot spring!

Beautiful colours and at least the canyon provides plenty of shade

Just a magical place

So salty you can actually see it - it stings too when you get in!

My first time seeing the absolutely stunning colour of the rock in Petra

Incredible carving in incredible rock! - Petra

Petra - just Petra

The textures are also amazing

Trust me to go to an amazing tourist location and take photos of cats

Quite a cool viewpoint

Silhouette in Petra

Most of the camel might be gone, but you can still make out his feet

Unique perspectives on the Treasury - as the first amazing carving encountered it's very hard to get a view with many tourist present.

Pair of mules in Petra

View straight down over the main thoroughfare of Petra

It was a long walk and it turns out you had to pay for the final view, but pretty much that's the only way to see the treasury without 100's of other people.

The rock is stunning

Wadi Rum is a desert - but instead of going to camp in it like most people, we decided to do a trip up and over Jebel Rum instead. It was incredible.

It gets more otherwordly as we climb above it

The erosion patterns in the rock were so cool

And the climbing begins

Up we go

This ledge is pretty high and gets pretty narrow towards the end

Desert panorama

More interesting erosion patterns. Does the rock erode this way because of the pebbles or do the pebbles just end up in the holes?

Max looking at how far we've come

Erosion octopus!

View as we near the summit of Jebel Rum

Climbing the final summit rock

The summit is painted with the Jordanian flag

What a beautiful evening view!

I was supposed to be helping to look for somewhere to camp, but it was just so stunning

Sunset begins

I've never seen a sunset quite like this!

Seriously this is incredible

Still going

Of course we had a wee campfire to make dinner tonight

Our sweet little campsite that we found under this roof, with all the lights from the desert camps behind

Last star of the morning

Morning campfire for a cup of tea

Sunrise - like sunset!

Such a cool and strange place

Shannon looking for the way down

Found it! Or at least one of the ~7 abseils on the way down. We think we did pretty well given that the map we had wasn't in a language that any of us spoke

Down in the canyon

Max looking up at where we came from

Making our way down the canyon - not far to go, just one more abseil and we made it just in the nick of time to head home!
